Component three seeks to develop/strengthen the national and/or regional regulatory and industry capacity to meet the SPS requirements of international trade (in areas such as, inspection, import/export certification, diagnostics, risk assessment, surveillance, HACCP, GAP, GMP). The component also seeks to develop systems and services that are key for supporting trade (i.e. strengthening laboratory systems, development of environmental and monitoring programmes for the fisheries sub-sector).

Training programmes for animal health, plant health and food safety developed and delivered for competent authorities and regulatory agencies

Capacity of Regulatory Personnel Strengthened in SPS Matters. Actions were conducted to develop/strengthen the national and/or regional regulatory and industry capacity to meet the SPS requirements of international trade in areas such as inspection, import/export certification, diagnostics, risk assessment, antimicrobial resistance, One-Health, food safety/quality. Over 190 Regulatory and professionals across CARIFORUM States have been trained/sensitized in these key areas.

Capacity Building in Traceability initiated – Pilot Study. The SPS Project is collaborating with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to conduct pilot studies in four (4) countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, and Grenada). These pilot studies allow SMEs to implement traceability systems for selected value chains – fresh produce, poultry, fisheries, condiments and spices. The information from these studies will be used to build the capacity of additional countries in the principles and practice of traceability systems.

Training programmes developed and delivered across the value chain for industry stakeholders

Training and Awareness Building of Key AHFS issues conducted. Over 140 private sector stakeholders sensitized in the areas of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), food safety, the principles of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and the importance of implementing these practices along the value chain.

Handbooks, Guidelines and Manual developed for building improved capacities of Public and Private Sector. A series of information products are being developed to assist with capacity building exercises for extension and private sector stakeholders. Information products include: GAP Audit Manual, Pesticide Management Operators Manual, Leptospirosis Bulletins (3).
